M. Night Shyamalan gave Beyond Fest audiences a surprise look at “Remain” in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, months before its February 2027 release. Early reactions describe the Jake Gyllenhaal thriller as frightening and unexpectedly moving.
The screening was the film’s world premiere, held ahead of a retrospective presentation of “The Sixth Sense.” Shyamalan co-wrote the supernatural romance with Nicholas Sparks.
Gyllenhaal plays Tate Gordon, a New York architect who travels to Cape Cod to design a summer home for his best friend after treatment for acute depression. He’s grieving his sister when he meets Wren, played by Phoebe Dynevor.
FilmSpeak critic Griffin Schiller called Gyllenhaal “a perfect Shyamalan lead; subdued but soulful” and Dynevor “magnetic.” Writer and comedian Josh Levesque described the movie as “scary as hell and heartbreaking.”
Critic AccordingToSeth called it “unlike anything M. Night Shyamalan has ever done,” praising its humor alongside its romance and scares. Those are reactions from the festival screening; wider audiences will have to wait until February.
