In A24’s adaptation of The Masque of the Red Death, Mikey Madison will play twin sisters. The film has been described as a dark comedy, and she’s described the tone as “beyond anything I have ever read before. I don’t even know if I quite understand it yet, but it’s at times very slapstick and very dramatic and interesting and weird.”
Specific plot details remain sketchy, but here’s what’s been reported so far.
The film will be set in medieval times, and the basic structure will follow Edgar Allan Poe’s original short story about a prince who sequesters the noble class in his castle while a plague ravages the lower class outside the castle grounds. The focus of the film will be on the long-lost twin sister of a noblewoman who assumes her sister’s identity to work her way into the castle.

Charlie Polinger is writing and directing The Masque of the Red Death, which was filmed earlier this year. Léa Seydoux and Benedict Wong star in the movie along with Mikey Madison.
The adaptation has been described as a dark comedy, and The Hollywood Reporter suggests that it is “a quintessential A24 movie, one that likely will include eye-brow raising, meme-able scenes that should resonate among the TikTok class.”
For her part, Mikey Madison, speaking to ScreenRant, said acting in the movie “was really fun and crazy.”
There is no release date set yet, but The Masque of the Red Death is expected sometime in 2027.
