Nicolas Cage will play Henry Logan opposite Antonio Banderas as Rai García in True Detective’s 5th season. HBO announced the casting on October 16, with filming scheduled to begin in 2027.
The announcement settles months of speculation about Cage’s involvement. At New York Comic Con the week before, he said: “I think I might do a season of True Detective. That’s OK that I’m the first to announce that, right?” His deal was finalized during the week of the announcement.

Issa López, who led season 4, True Detective: Night Country, is returning to write, direct and serve as showrunner. Cage and Banderas will also executive produce.
HBO hasn’t revealed the plot, but López has teased “really fucked up stuff.” She’s said the season follows a new case with new characters in the same shared universe, with “important connections” to the events and characters in Ennis, Alaska. She’s also said magical realism is part of her approach.
A Jamaica Bay, New York, setting has been reported, but HBO hasn’t confirmed it. The bay is a tidal estuary with salt marshes; it spans parts of Brooklyn and Queens and crosses jurisdictional boundaries. The October 16 announcement didn’t include a release date or season title.
