Rochelle’s Revenge Spell on Laura Lizzie in the Craft Came Back to Haunt Her

Updated

A still from The Craft (1996)

In The Craft (1996), Rochelle gets the revenge she wanted until she sees her racist bully, Laura Lizzie, sobbing in the school showers with most of her hair gone. Her satisfaction gives way to remorse. Later, Rochelle looks into a mirror, and her reflection turns away from her.

Played by Rachel True, Rochelle is one of the few Black students at her Catholic school. Laura, played by Christine Taylor, targets her with racist insults, calls her hair “nappy,” and humiliates her during swim practice.

After Sarah joins the coven, the 4 girls cast spells for themselves. Rochelle asks for the strength to stop hating the people who hate her, singling out Laura.

When Laura next bullies her, her hair begins to fall out. The loss becomes so severe that she eventually wears a wig.

The shower scene makes Rochelle face what her magic has done. Laura curls up crying as her friends struggle to comfort her, and Rochelle witnesses the distress behind the punishment she set in motion. At a party later in the film, Laura treats her more civilly, with an awkwardness that suggests she’s been humbled.

The spell also becomes part of Rochelle’s own punishment. When the coven turns against Sarah, Sarah makes the other girls confront their deepest fears. Rochelle sees a vision of herself completely bald, facing the same fate she inflicted on Laura.
