Hey Creepy Catalogers,

Most horror movies make you afraid of things that go bump in the night but this week I’m highlighting scary movies that take place in broad daylight:

The Belko Experiment (2017). Streaming on Tubi. 80 Americans working in an office building in Columbia are suddenly instructed to kill each other. One of my favorite Battle Royale movies!

Kalifornia (1993). Streaming on Prime. A young ensemble cast of Brad Pitt, Juliette Lewis, David Duchovny and Michelle Forbes star as two couples on a road trip to California. Along the way the group stops at infamous murder sites so that one of the couples can work on a book about serial killers. They end up with more info than they could ever want.

We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011). Streaming on Prime. This movie doesn’t need dark shadows or jump scares to terrify viewers. This deeply uncomfortable slow burn movie about a reluctant mother and her creepy son is chilling all on its own.

Also streaming: I might finally have time to binge the second season of The Wilds on Prime. It’s a suspenseful drama about a group of girls whose plane crashes on a deserted island (yes, it’s The Lord of the Flies but with girls). I thought the first season was really cool and the female characters were dimensional humans (rare).

In theaters: A24’s Men (2022) about a woman who is stalked in the English countryside.
