The Creepiest Part Of ‘Midsommar’ That Most People Missed
You gotta watch the Director’s Cut.

Midsommar (2019) is a great scary movie. Even though the majority of the action takes place in broad daylight, it still fills us with dread from all directions. There’s the obvious creep factor of being isolated in a very remote part of rural Sweden, the unfamiliar culture, not speaking the language and of course the biggest dread builder of all — Christian’s apathy for his girlfriend Dani as she deals with the trauma of her entire family suddenly passing away.
Indeed, Dani’s deteriorating self-esteem and loneliness is terrifying, as is what happens to Christian and his friends. But most people fail to notice an even creepier part of Midsommar‘s plot. That’s the fate of Simon and Connie.

Simon and Connie are two travelers from London who Dani and her group meet when they first arrive at the commune in Sweden. Later, everyone attends the ättestupa, a traditional Hårga ceremony where members who have reached the age of 72 commit suicide by leaping off a cliff. This year, one of the Hårga survives the fall. He is then killed by another member of the commune with a large mallet. Simon and Connie decide to leave.

The couple separates to pack and when Connie cannot find Simon, an elder tells her he has already left. Connie appears to leave on her own but her fate is revealed in the final scene when we can count her among the nine people being sacrificed by the Hårga. Connie is wearing the same traditional outfit as a boy in an earlier scene (included only in the director’s cut) who was almost drowned in a ritual. The boy was granted mercy and we can assume Connie was later drowned in his place. Here is the deleted scene that explains the drowning ritual:
And here is Connie being wheeled towards the yellow triangle building, looking drowned, wearing the same costume as the boy in the drowning ritual:

If you can believe it, Connie’s boyfriend suffered an even worse fate.
High on hallucinogenics and fresh from his sexual assault, Christian stumbles into a shed where Simon is in the midst of blood eagle torture.
The scene with Christian and Simon starts at 1:15:
If you’re like me, you assumed Simon was already deceased in this scene. Unfortunately, that is incorrect. Blood eagle torture is performed while the victim is still alive. Here’s how Wiki describes the method: “The victims (in both cases members of royal families) were placed in a prone position, their ribs severed from the spine with a sharp tool, and their lungs pulled through the opening to create a pair of ‘wings’.”

In the scene, you can also see Simon’s lungs slightly inflate, indicating that he is very much still alive. This is confirmed by the Midsommar screenplay, which states that Simon is breathing. Next time you watch Midsommar, see if you can spot it.
