Godzilla Minus Zero is out in theaters this week, but if Toho wants another, Takashi Yamazaki is likely to agree to it.
Godzilla Minus Zero is the sequel to 2023’s Godzilla Minus One, a movie that created a worldwide sensation and stayed in theaters for months. It was also the only Godzilla movie ever to win an Academy Award (for Best Visual Effects). Will Godzilla Minus Zero catch on like the previous film? We’ll find out in the coming weeks.

Much of the marketing for Godzilla Minus Zero seemed to indicate that this would be the end of this particular story. At least one of the trailers says, “There is no third time. Everything ends here.” But Yamazaki says he wouldn’t say no to another movie in this continuity.
Yamazaki told SFX Magazine, “I swung for the fences with Godzilla Minus Zero. [These films] are huge milestones, looking back at my career and in my life so far. But that doesn’t mean I would never work on another Godzilla film again.” He added, “If Toho came to me with another offer to explore this world even further, I’d probably say yes. Yet at the same time, if you told me this is my last Godzilla film, I would be quite satisfied with what we were able to achieve.”
Whatever the future holds for Godzilla (the franchise is as strong as ever), Takashi Yamazaki’s next movie looks like it will be Grandgear, his first English-language film. Produced by Bad Robot, Yamazaki will write and direct. Plot details haven’t been revealed, but test footage shown at CinemaCon this year reportedly showed giant robots fighting. Paul Giamatti, Sam Nivola, Nico Parker were recently announced for the cast, and Grandgear is scheduled for an early 2028 release.
