Whoopi Goldberg Asked Trump if He Could Please Lower the Price of Eggs Before Putting Tariffs on Movies

“We teach people who will never get to America, what America is all about. We show them who we are. If you impose a tax like this, you’re saying that we’re not good enough, and that’s not the case. We’re the best in the world.”

Whoopi Goldberg argued that Trump’s tariffs on movies would harm the movie industry while hosting The View.

President Trump made headlines this week for proposing a 100% tariff on movies produced on foreign lands. It’s unclear if he means Hollywood movies that are filmed in other countries or just foreign films looking to be distributed in the states. Trump’s tariffs would negatively affect most major horror movies, as filming in other countries is a common practice. Of the top grossing horror movies of 2025, Nosferatu, The Monkey, Heart Eyes, Death of a Unicorn, Drop, Wolf Man and Until Dawn were filmed in other countries, while Sinners, The Woman in the Yard, Companion and Presence were filmed in the states.

Trump proposed the movie tariffs on his social media account.

Academy award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg addressed President Trump’s tariffs while hosting The View. After making a point that the tariffs would infringe on creative freedom because, for instance, a story that takes place in Europe would need to pay tariffs to be filmed there, Goldberg said “Look, could you please lower the price of eggs before you start this?” This was a reference to Trump’s campaign promise that he would bring grocery prices down on “day one”. Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, a former Trump staffer, echoed the idea that Trump’s tariffs would negatively affect the entertainment industry, asking if they’re going to shoot the next season of Emily in Paris in Texas.

Goldberg also provided an alternate solution for Trump to encourage more film productions to work in the U.S.: “The bottom line is tax incentives. If you want to change, you have to change it in the states and make it available for people to shoot here.” Some U.S. states are already popular filming locations because of the tax incentives they offer. For instance, Georgia offers a number of incentives including a 20% tax credit, which has led to shows like Stranger Things and The Walking Dead being filmed there.

Goldberg also made a pitch that might appeal to President Trump, arguing that Hollywood movies help people all over the world learn English and are a display of American excellence. “We teach people who will never get to America, what America is all about. We show them who we are. If you impose a tax like this, you’re saying that we’re not good enough, and that’s not the case. We’re the best in the world.”
