Movie of the Day: Haunted House of Pancakes

Haunted House of Pancakes (2025)
Carlos (Patrick Johnston) shows off his killer food.

Of Tuesday’s big batch of new streaming releases, what did I choose to watch first? The goofiest movie, naturally. That would be Haunted House of Pancakes. Now, there seems to be some debate on our Facebook post about yesterday’s releases concerning whether or not Haunted House of Pancakes has actually been released. All I can say is, I just finished watching it on Amazon where it’s been streaming for at least 24 hours. I never post anything in my announcement articles without making sure it’s available to watch, and I always post a link to where it’s streaming. If you’re reading this right now and the link isn’t working, then it’s either not available in your region (Creepy Catalog is based in the United States), or the movie was taken down since this article was posted. The latter has actually happened a few times for new movies I find on Amazon, but that’s because Amazon took the movie down after I posted about it, not because it was never up. Anyway.

Haunted House of Pancakes (2025)
When food bites back.

Haunted House of Pancakes is as goofy as it sounds. It’s about a cursed waffle maker that influences the chef of a small diner to make sentient, possessed food. The food eventually attacks the diners, turning them into monsters. Two people try to fight back: a meek waiter and a studious young woman who just wants some peace and quiet. They’ll have to work together to find a way to break the curse and stop the growing demonic force.

Jay (Fabian Guerrero) and Sarah (Jada Krueger) survey the chaos as it begins.

The movie is goofy, obviously, but it’s also quite well made for such an intentionally silly premise. The stylized visuals don’t always appear realistic (why would a kitchen in a diner be so incredibly dark all the time?), but they work well for a movie like this. The film also uses a predominance of practical effects for its blood and food-creatures, and they all look quite nice. CGI is used at times, and I’m pretty sure I spotted some AI-generated smoke at the end, but the effects are successful overall because they’re fun throughout. My favorite creatures are the crab-fries and the pancake with sausage legs.

The cursed waffle maker and its waffle body.

The story, while good, does take a while to really get going. It felt like the action was going to get started at about twenty minutes in, but it doesn’t really get wild until about the fifty minute mark. There’s definitely some fun before that, but it feels like the movie could have been a bit more generous with spreading the food attacks throughout the story more.

Star Rating: 3 out of 5

Haunted House of Pancakes was better than I expected, but exactly as fun as I’d hoped. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys silly horror comedies done well with a low budget. It’s currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video as a digital rental and purchase (at least, hopefully it’s still there by the time you’re reading this). I understand the movie still has some festival dates as well, and this feels like a great one to see on a big screen with lots of people.

James Duval in May (2002).

James Duval was born on September 10th, 1972. James’s most famous role is as Frank, the man underneath the rabbit suit in Donnie Darko (2001). One of my favorite roles he did was as the guy in May who likes Jujubes and takes his shirt off in May’s apartment. In horror, James was also in The Clown at Midnight (1998), Tales of Halloween (2015), Amityville Karen (2022), and many more.

Fred Olen Ray the wrestler
In addition to filmmaking, Fred Olen Ray also started a pro-wrestling company in California around the year 2000. He also wrestled, competing under the name Freddie Valentine. (image credit: @IndieArchivist on X)

Also born on September 10th, in 1954, is Fred Olen Ray. Fred is a director, writer, producer, and actor who has worked on many low-budget films since the late 1970s. He also directed Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988), Evil Toons (1992), Venomous (2001), Piranha Women (2022), and many more.

Events on This Day

Annabelle Wallis in Malignant (2021)
Malignant stars Annabelle Wallis (pictured) and was directed by James Wan.

Malignant was released in theaters and on HBO Max on September 10th, 2021. The theatrical/streaming simultaneous release was part of Warner Bros.’ months-long reaction to the uncertain future of theaters in the immediate wake of shutdowns during the pandemic in 2020. The film was only on HBO Max for a month before being taken down and then released on regular video-on-demand and physical media. As of today, you’ll either have to buy it on physical media or rent/buy digitally to watch it.

Patricia Arquette stars in Stigmata (1999).

Stigmata was released in theaters on September 10th, 1999. The film is about an atheist who begins to suffer from stigmata, showing the same wounds that were inflicted on Jesus during his crucifixion. I haven’t watched the movie in years, but despite widespread bad reviews I remember thinking it was pretty fun for an over-the-top religion-inspired thriller. Stigmata is currently streaming on Prime Video.

More movies released on September 10th:

  • Witchboard 2: The Devil’s Doorway (limited, 1993)
  • Stir of Echoes (1999)
  • Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
  • Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)
