5 Date Night Horror Movies to Watch if Your Partner Doesn’t Like Horror Movies

There are two different paths to take with someone who isn’t into horror.

Anya Taylor-Joy stars as a memorable diner in The Menu (2022).

Unfortunately, not everyone loves horror movies. This is difficult because when you really love something, you want to share it with the people closest to you. This is especially true with movies, because they make the perfect at-home date night activity.

There are two different paths to take with someone who isn’t into horror: bloodless horror movies that are still scary but not visually upsetting, or light horror movies that aren’t very scary but still fall under the “horror” umbrella. If you’re a horror fan whose partner is less than interested in the genre, these horror movies make a good compromise for you and your squeamish significant other. We’ve also answered basic questions like how scary the movie is and if it contains jump scares.

The Others (2001)

Nicole Kidman stars in The Others (2001).

Plot summary: Near the end of WWII a woman and her children live isolated in a remote mansion. Because the children are extremely photosensitive, the curtains must be closed and the home is cloaked in darkness. The children then begin to complain about “the others” they see around the house.

Is it scary? Yes. This is the scariest movie on this list.

Are there jump scares? Yes.

Is it bloody? No.

The Visit (2015)

Unless your partner randomly has a fear of old people, The Visit is a great horror movie for beginners.

Plot summary: Two children are sent to stay with their estranged grandparents for a week. Upon arrival, the grandparents behave strangely and it seems there is some dark secret they are keeping from the kids.

Is it scary? Yes. The Visit likely won’t scare horror fans, but it is creepy and scary to a general audience.

Are there jump scares? Yes.

Is it bloody? No.

Get Out (2017)

The social commentary in Get Out is fun to talk about and might even help your partner understand what makes horror such a great genre: it can be used as a vehicle to talk about touchy subjects.

Plot summary: A black man goes on a weekend trip to visit his white girlfriend’s parents, where he discovers a shocking family secret.

Is it scary? Lightly.

Are there jump scares? Yes.

Is it bloody? A little.

Villains (2019)

Comedy/horror hybrids are probably the best way to ease someone into horor. Laughing provides a release so the tension doesn’t build up to anything too scary and who doesn’t enjoy a few giggles?

Plot summary: A small time criminal couple breaks into a home hoping to steal a car, but instead discover they’ve messed with the wrong family.

Is it scary? Not scary at all.

Are there jump scares? Yes.

Is it bloody? Some.

The Menu (2022)

Ralph Fiennes plays a demented chef in The Menu.

Plot summary: A woman goes on a date to a fancy fine-dining experience on an island where the chef has sinister plans for the menu.

Is it scary? Not very.

Are there jump scares? No.

Is it bloody? A very small amount.
