Wicked: For Good is great. K-Pop Demon Hunters is fantastic. But sometimes you might want a movie musical with more blood and silliness. I mean, I want those things. So here is a list of musicals you can stream right now that contain awesome music, goofy plots, and a good amount of horror-themed blood and violence. Enjoy!
Chainsaws Were Singing (2024)
Chainsaws Were Singing is kind of like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre if it were interpreted as a musical by Trey Parker and Matt Stone (more on their horror musical below). The film took more than a decade to complete and release, and the results sing for themselves. Chainsaws Were Singing follows a man’s quest to rescue his girlfriend from an eclectic family of cannibals, all of whom might break into song at any moment. The musical numbers are superb, and the story embraces silliness on a near-Troma level.
Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead (2006)
Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead is gross, dumb, trashy, and potentially offensive to a wide swath of people. It’s also stupidly funny, and the songs are surprisingly catchy. The story involves a fast-food chicken restaurant, American Chicken Bunker, built on top of an ancient burial ground. As weird, supernatural events threaten to take over the people in the restaurant, Arbie gets a job at the restaurant just to spite the girl he likes, Wendy, who is an activist protesting American Chicken Bunker. So, Poultrygeist is a zombie-chicken love/revenge horror comedy musical.
Ed Gein: The Musical (2010)
Ed Gein: The Musical takes some rather generous liberties with the story of the infamous killer and corpse mutilator. This is a micro-budget affair that gets into the head of Ed Gein, exploring what could lead a man to become a monster in a silly and satirical way. Poor taste? Maybe, but it’s a fine effort that will work for the right audience.
Cannibal! The Musical (1993)
Cannibal! The Musical is probably the most well-known movie on this list, and for good reason. It was written and directed by Trey Parker before he and Matt Stone created South Park. It was first screened in 1993, but it wasn’t until Troma picked it up and re-released it while South Park was exploding in popularity that Cannibal! The Musical truly became a cult hit. The movie tells a ridiculous version of the story of Alfred (aka Alferd) Packer, a real person who admitted to cannibalizing people during an expedition in the winter of 1874.
Sweet Meats (2025)
Bobby Sweet begins the story as an aspiring country-music singer plunging toilets in a failing restaurant. When the boss’s daughter discovers a secret ingredient that quickly makes their burgers a hit, she and Bobby take over the restaurant as it rockets to success. Bobby can now focus on becoming a county-music legend, but they still need a lot of human meat to keep their unsuspecting customers happy. Sweet Meats is a micro-budget comedy with oodles of charm, a decent amount of blood, goofy comedy, and a series of fun music videos.
