Chainsaws Were Singing is an Estonian horror-musical that feels like a cross between Cannibal! The Musical (1993), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), and Mother’s Day (1980). Tom’s new girlfriend Maria is abducted by a blood-covered killer, so he sets out to rescue her. Throughout Tom’s journey and Maria’s attempts to escape a cannibal family, many songs break out, many odd characters are encountered, and much silliness occurs.

Chainsaws Were Singing
Maria endures the taunts of Killer’s mother.

Chainsaws Were Singing is made for a very niche demographic of musical-loving horror fans who love gore and Troma-esque humor, so if that’s your thing, you’ll have a great time. The gore is over-the-top and mostly practical, though some modern, not-great CGI does slip in from time to time (some of the CGI is fitting for the tone, some isn’t). The jokes might wear thin after a while, but the musical numbers hold everything together supremely well. I highly recommend this for fans of silly horror comedies, especially if you’re also into musicals.

  • Jeff Miller, a producer and co-writer of the surprisingly good Popeye the Slayer Man, is launching a shared universe based on twisted (and apparently comical) interpretations of serial killers. First up is Jeffrey Dollmer, which is about a killer doll possessed by the spirit of Jeffrey Dahmer. Ted Bunny is also planned, and you can take a guess at which killer that’s based on. (Deadline)
