Queens of the Dead

The zombies shimmer in Queens of the Dead.

Star Rating: 3.5 out of 5 | Rent on Prime Video

Tina Romero directed and co-wrote (with Erin Judge) this campy and fun tribute to her father George A. Romero’s zombie-movie legacy. Queens of the Dead stars Katy O’Brian as Dre, the owner of a small club in Brooklyn. During a drag-show event, Dre and her co-workers are trapped inside the club as a zombie outbreak begins taking over the city. The premise is basic, which allows the movie to highlight all of its characters and the comedy each of them brings to the story. The first third of the movie is quite funny and has some solid plotting, but the momentum begins to drag as it goes on, and it feels like the focus is too spread out. If you enjoy LGBTQ+ horror comedies like Slay though, you’ll probably like Queens of the Dead.

Love Wants Us Dead

Star Rating: 2.5 out of 5 | Rent on Prime Video

Love Wants Us Dead takes an arthouse approach to a dark romance. Anais is a drifter in a small desert town who is compelled to record her surroundings using a video camera. Rose becomes intrigued by the mysterious Anais, but as she gets closer to her, Rose discovers a dark side to the woman’s existence. The horror and romance themes are understated and sparse, to the point where many viewers might feel they’re underdeveloped. Much of the movie’s power lies in the unstated, which results in a quiet movie where it doesn’t feel like much is happening. It’s an aesthetically impressive film, but the themes of timelessness and impermanence probably won’t be enough for viewers looking for real horror or romance.

In the News

Sharknado (2013)
I’ve only seen the first Sharknado from 2013 (which is the movie this image is from), and that was because RiffTrax riffed it. But I know there’s a market for a Sharknado prequel, so why not?
  • The Sharknado franchise will continue with Sharknado Origins. Production will begin later this year with an expected release date sometime during summer 2026. (Variety)
  • Paranormal Investigations: The Next Generation, a sequel to a movie that hasn’t been widely released yet, is currently in development. (Bloody Disgusting)

Movie of the Day

Dark Ride (2006)

Dark Ride (2006)
Three of the main cast members are Patrick Renna, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, and Jennifer Tisdale.

Dark Ride was one of the movies included in the first batch of the After Dark Horrorfest: 8 Films to Die For DVD releases. I’ve been on a mission to collect all of the Horrorfest movies I missed out on, so this was a first-time watch for me. Dark Ride is a slasher movie about a group of college students who decide to take a road trip to an infamous “dark ride” in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The ride was closed a decade earlier when it was discovered that the ride was home to a brutal serial killer, but it’s now scheduled to be re-opened. Once they break into the building where the ride is housed, they find themselves trapped with the killer who has coincidentally escaped from the mental institution where he was being held.

Dark Ride (2006)
There’s some decent gore in the movie, and there’s even more in the deleted scenes on the DVD.

I had a lot of fun with Dark Ride. It’s cheesy at times, but the practical gore effects are good, and the plot is just twisty enough to keep things interesting in-between the kill scenes. It feels a bit like Hell Fest (2018) or even a little like The Funhouse (1981), but with that mid-2000s slasher touch that I’ve come to really embrace over the last few years. You can watch Dark Ride on Tubi. The DVD is reasonably priced too.
