Laurie Strode smoking weed in Halloween (1978)

Jamie Lee Curtis has explained how Laurie Strode could smoke weed in Halloween and still read as the good girl.

The question comes from the rule, later codified in Scream, that avoiding drugs is one of the ways to stay alive in a horror movie. According to Curtis, Laurie smokes like a good girl: “She’s the good girl, even though she did smoke, which is such an anomaly for a good girl…But the way she smokes it, you can see she’s not experienced. She coughs and she sort of blows it.”

Scream came decades after Halloween and presented avoiding drugs as a rule for staying alive in a horror movie. Laurie had already survived while breaking it.

Curtis’s reading preserves Laurie’s innocence through her inexperience, even as the character smokes.
