In Black Mirror’s “San Junipero,” Yorkie and Kelly fall in love in a beach town built to let people outlive their bodies. Mackenzie Davis plays Yorkie, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Kelly, whose romance unfolds in a setting that recreates the 1980s.

The town’s secret changes what a future together could mean: San Junipero is a virtual-reality simulation. People nearing the end of their lives can spend limited hours there each week through nostalgia therapy. After death, they can choose to have their consciousness uploaded permanently, living on in digital versions of their younger selves.

That choice gives the romance its stakes. Love, identity and mortality become questions about whether to spend eternity somewhere designed to preserve youth, with the possibility of sharing that existence with someone you love.

Written by Charlie Brooker and directed by Owen Harris, the episode premiered on Netflix in 2016 as Season 3, Episode 4. Its hopeful queer love story earned 2 Primetime Emmys: Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Writing.
