A still from Possibly in Michigan (1983), Cecelia Condit’s surreal horror-musical short film.

Written and directed by artist Cecelia Condit, it follows two women being pursued by a creepy man at a suburban shopping mall. The man is a cannibal who plans to prey on them, but the feminist twist is that the women get him first in a gruesome reversal.

Creepy songs, deadpan exchanges and absurd violence turn familiar places into a world governed by nightmare logic.

The film uses fairy-tale conventions and dark humor to explore female agency and male predation. Cannibalism makes the struggle literal: the friends take control of the violence aimed at their bodies and turn it against their pursuer.

Decades after its release, the short found a younger audience on social media. Its “Animal Cannibal” song and dialogue clips circulated among horror and dreamcore communities.
