According to Rotten Tomatoes, These Are the 10 Best Horror Movies of All Time (And Where to Stream Them)

This is a very controversial ranking.

“Best” is subjective, but review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes used critic and fan reviews to create a ranking of 200 of the best horror movies of all time. It follows Dr. Frankenstein as he is extorted into creating a bride for his monster, and what happens when the bride and the monster finally meet. I’ve honestly never seen The Loved Ones on a top 10 of all time list before. It seems like a strange inclusion considering the heavy-hitters on this list, but the overwhelmingly positive reviews do make sense given how the movie successfully upends typical horror movie tropes. The Loved Ones is about high school student Brent who politely rejects an invitation from classmate Lola to a school formal, as he intends to go with his girlfriend. On the night of the dance, Brent is abducted by Lola and her Father, who turn out to be complete sickos.

Host is a supernatural screenlife horror movie. During the Covid lockdown of 2020, a group of friends connect with each other via a weekly Zoom call. They decide to entertain themselves by hiring a psychic to lead a virtual séance and accidentally summon a demon.

The movie is based on the excellent horror novel of the same name by John Ajvide Lindqvist.

An Australian supernatural horror movie written an directed by Jennifer Kent. A stressed widow is overwhelmed by her 6-year-old son, who believes the villain from a children’s pop-up book, Mister Babadook, is real. The Babadook is the most controversial entry on this list. Viewers tend to be split between finding the characters too annoying and believing The Babadook is a masterful horror movie about motherhood and grief.

According to the New York Times, Get Out (2017) was the highest rated horror movie of the 21st century on both their readers survey and the Hollywood insiders list.

Jordan Peele made his feature debut with this psychological horror movie that commented on race relations in America. A young black man goes on a weekend trip to his white girlfriend’s parents’ home. While on the surface her family is welcoming (even assuring the young man that they would have voted for Obama a third time), there is a sinister motivation behind the visit.

A South Korean horror movie about a policeman who has to solve a series of murders caused by a mystery illness in order to save his daughter. The Wailing is perfect for fans who like gory movies like The Evil Dead (1981).

One of the most underseen great horror movies, His House follows Bol and Rial, a refugee couple from South Sudan as they seek asylum in Britain. The couple is given probational asylum and a shabby council home to live in, with the understanding that any trouble could end with the couple being deported back to their war-torn home country. When a haunting in their home terrorizes Bol and Rial, they struggle in isolation, alone and unable to reach out to anyone for help.
