Killers, ghosts, and monsters populate Max’s classic offerings this month.

There aren’t any newly-released horror movies heading to Max in May, but there are a few good older films about monsters of both human and beast varieties. There are also a couple of horror comedies of the spoof variety.

Hannibal (2001)

Hannibal Lecter is on the loose, and he’s being chased by two people with very different agendas. Clarice Starling seeks to apprehend Hannibal after he contacts her, and a wealthy man named Verger hunts Hannibal for revenge after their previous encounter left him without a face. While Hannibal can’t compare to The Silence of the Lambs, it has moments that will stick with you for a very long time.
A Haunted House (2013)

In the tradition of the Scary Movie, uh, movies, A Haunted House spoofs a different subgenre: found footage horror. Specifically, this film is set up like Paranormal Activity, with Marlon Wayans and Essence Atkins (as Malcolm and Kisha) moving into a house occupied by a demonic force.
A Haunted House 2 (2014)

Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) moves into a new house with a new love interest, but old problems follow him when he finds his new house is haunted. The movies skewered this time around? Ghost movies like The Conjuring, Insidious, and Sinister.
The Shining (1980)

If you’re a horror fan, chances are you’ve already seen The Shining. If not, now’s a good time to watch since it’s not always available on subscription services like Max. While you’re on Max, you can also watch other Stephen King movies including It (the miniseries as well as both newer movies) and Carrie (1976 and 2013). ‘Salem’s Lot (2024) is also on Max.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

The Silence of the Lambs is an influential classic that deserves to be watched periodically for all horror and thriller fans. Just about every psychological crime thriller that has come after The Silence of the Lambs owes something to this film.

Kong: Skull Island (2017)

Kong: Skull Island wasn’t the first MonsterVerse movie released (that would be 2014’s Godzilla), but it is the first film chronologically in continuity. It’s also one of the more horror-forward entries in the series with all sorts of giant creatures trying to kill the members of an expedition to Skull Island. Even Kong is scary in this one, at least initially. His introduction as he tears apart helicopters is superb monster-movie mayhem.
