Courteney Cox has a pitch for whoever’s hiring on Scream 8: give her the director’s chair.
“I think I should, honestly. Nobody knows more about that movie than I do,” Cox said at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, when Deadline asked if she’d take on the eighth film.
It’s a fair claim. She’s the only actor to appear in all seven Scream movies, and she has directing credits of her own — the 2014 Seann William Scott comedy Just Before I Go and her upcoming true crime thriller Evil Genius, which stars David Harbour and Patricia Arquette and premiered at TIFF.
Cox is quick to note she isn’t the only expert, pointing to “the creator and the writers and Wes Craven and everyone who’s been in it. But I think it’d be great and fun and it’d be a good publicity thing. Get on it!”
The job is up for grabs. Scream 8 was greenlit at Spyglass Media Group after Scream 7 became a commercial hit, and twins Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, showrunners on Peacock’s Poker Face, are writing it.
The franchise has cycled through directors over the years. Craven directed the first four films. Kevin Williamson, who created the series, took the reins on Scream 7, while Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett handled Scream 5 and Scream 6.
If Cox lands the job, it would be the first film in the franchise built by a woman-led creative crew — fitting for a series carried on screen by Cox, Neve Campbell, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, and the late Hayden Panettiere.
