New in Theaters

Until Dawn

Will Until Dawn be an interesting twist on the game, or it is going to be so different that it might as well be titled something else?

Loosely based on the video game of the same title, Until Dawn utilizes a time-loop plot structure (think Groundhog Day or Happy Death Day) to torment its characters. The film follows Clover (Ella Rubin) and her friends as they search the area where Clover’s missing sister was last seen. They are all brutally murdered, but they wake up alive only to face a different killer on a repeat of the same day. Their only path towards escape is if they can survive until dawn.

Fréwaka

Fréwaka is an unnerving Irish folk horror film from writer and director Aislinn Clarke.

In-home caregiver Shoo (Clare Monnelly) is sent to look after Peig (Bríd Ní Neachtain), an elderly woman suffering from dementia. As Shoo struggles with her own mental health issues, Peig’s fear and paranoia begins to have a strong negative effect on her. But could they both be under the influence of something supernatural?

Freaky Tales

Freaky Tales is from directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Captain Marvel).

Freaky Tales is an anthology film set in an alternate-reality version of 1980s California. The stories connect with each other in a way similar to Pulp Fiction, and they’re tied together with a mysterious cosmic force that pops up repeatedly. The overall vibe is fun and cheesy in a grindhouse kind of way.

Hell of a Summer

Hell of a Summer was written and directed by Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk.

The summer camp slasher comedy is a tried and true formula. Hell of a Summer largely adheres to that formula, but from a Gen Z perspective. With the owners of Camp Pineway gone, the counselors party. Their fun is spoiled when a masked killer starts picking them off one by one, but who is the killer? Will anyone live long enough to find out?

Ash

Ash was directed by Flying Lotus.

Riya (Eiza González) wakes up with no memory of how she ended up on an alien planet, and no idea why her crewmates are dead. As she tries to piece together what happened, a man calling himself Brion (Aaron Paul) arrives. Can she trust him? Can they trust each other? Ash is a visually stunning sci-fi movie with strong psychological horror aspects.

Locked

Locked is from the director of Brightburn (2019), David Yarovesky.

When Eddie (Bill Skarsgård) decides to search an SUV for some quick cash, he makes the biggest mistake of his life. The vehicle he chose is a trap set up by a man with a grudge against criminals. Controlling the SUV remotely, the man locks Eddie inside and subjects him to mental and physical torture. Locked is based on the Argentinian/Spanish film 4×4 (2019).

The Killgrin

The director of The Killgrin, Joanna Tsanis, also directed a short film titled Smile (2021). Both the feature and short star Konstantina Mantelos.

Suffering from a recent tragedy, Miranda (Konstantina Mantelos) seeks help for her mental and spiritual health. She learns that she is being haunted by an entity that feeds on her grief and misery, and the “Killgrin” has started affecting the people in Miranda’s life.

The Mill Killers

The original title of The Mill Killers is Scopophobia.

This giallo-inspired crime thriller is about a reunion of a group of friends who share a dark secret. Rhiannon (Catrin Jones) is particularly affected by what they’re all hiding, as she suffers from paranoid thoughts that everyone in her hometown knows their collective guilt. While attempting to gain closure at the location where their secrets began, the friends grow suspicious that Rhiannon’s paranoia might be justified.

Healing Towers

William McNamara (Surviving the Game, Copycat) stars as Dr. Mark Healer.

A detective searching for his missing daughter is led to Dr. Healer, a psychiatrist with dangerous ideas. Dr. Healer’s unusual therapy involves forcing people to act out their fantasies, even if those fantasies involve murder.
