Nine years ago, So-young’s young son Sun-woo went missing while on a camping trip. The boy was presumed dead, though no body was found. So-young struggled to deal with her grief, using an augmented-reality simulation of her son. But she cannot move on from the time-frozen AI simulation of her boy, so when Sun-woo returns home nearly a decade later, So-young doesn’t know how to react. Complicating matters is the fact that Sun-woo’s return might coincide with recent crimes in the area.

The premise for Paradise Lost feels like it might be a bit complicated, but the story sounds quite interesting. The potential for psychological drama is high, though the reviews I’ve seen for the movie so far are rather middling.

Even so, Paradise Lost was written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho (Colony, Train to Busan), so I have my hopes up for it. The film is based on the novel Black Inferno by Oh Sung-eun. Kim Hyun-joo (Jung_E) and Bae Hyun-sung (The Divine Fury) star as mother and son.

Paradise Lost is currently playing in limited theaters across the United States.
