Little Shopping Trip of Horrors
It’s the perfect time to stream horror movies about shopping.

Hey Creepy Catalogers,
Like most people without a film degree, I had no idea horror was so political before I started diving in to the history and stories behind iconic genre favs. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was about Vietnam! Candyman was about gentrification! And as Creepy Catalog editor Chris Catt points out, there’s a whole sub-genre of horror movies about the horrors of consumerism. As Black Friday and Cyber Monday and the whole hoopla of holiday buying play out in our lives this weekend, I thought it was the perfect time to stream horror movies about shopping:
Black Friday (2021). In theaters and available for rental/purchase on Amazon and YouTube. Bruce Campbell and Devon Sawa star in this movie about parasitic aliens and a band of disgruntled toy store workers showing up for their Black Friday shift.
Dawn of the Dead (1978). For some reason this classic is basically only available to buy hard copies of, but the extended remastered version is currently available for free on YouTube. This is George A. Romero’s follow up to Night of the Living Dead (1968), though the characters and setting are totally different. The film centers on a group of survivors fleeing the zombie apocalypse by taking refuge in a suburban mall.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992). Streaming on Prime via IMDB. Available to anyone who has Prime or the IMDB app, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an iconic black comedy horror movie about a shopping-addicted valley girl who learns she is this generation’s slayer. We see Buffy transition from bimbo to badass as Donald Sutherland and Luke Perry cheer her on. This is what wholesome masculinity looks like! Here’s some fun Buffy the Vampire Slayer trivia to read while you watch.
More movies about the horrors of shopping, the best Thanksgiving horror movies, and Christmas horror movies I’m looking forward to watching!
If you’d like to experience the horrors of shopping first hand, our Creepy Catalog merch is on its only sale of the year. (Just kidding! We hope you have a great experience! Use code BF2021 for 15% off all orders over $20.) I created this “Would You Rather?” card game especially for horror fans. They’re a great gift or item to bring along to a family gathering to break the ice and have some fun without having to make small talk about your job/life decisions.
