Previewing the 13 AMC Horror and Genre Series Streaming on Netflix in August 2024
A bunch of horror and related genre shows that were previously exclusive to AMC will be streaming on Netflix soon! This preview will help you pick which one to watch first.
Table of Contents
Netflix has historically been a home away from home for some of AMC’s best series. In addition to previously hosting shows like Mad Men and The Killing (which Netflix actually revived for a final season), Netflix currently streams The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and Better Call Saul. And soon, 13 more AMC series will be joining Netflix. Why is this exciting news for horror fans? Because many of the shows are horror or horror-adjacent, and the rest will all appeal to fans of genre television.
This article is a preview of the thirteen AMC series that will begin streaming on Netflix beginning August 19th, 2024. Netflix will carry each show for one year under the current deal between the two companies. So, if you aren’t already subscribed to AMC+, this is the best time to find out what you’re missing.
The specific seasons added to Netflix are noted in each writeup below. Some of the series will stream in their entirety, while others are incomplete. To help make sense of this, the main heading for each writeup below states which seasons will be on Netflix. Noted directly beneath each heading is whether Netflix will carry the complete series, or if there are additional seasons available or upcoming on AMC+. Also, if a series is currently ongoing, it’s unlikely that a new season will be added to Netflix even if it airs within the next year. After all, this is all a big incentive from AMC+ to get you to subscribe to their service (which is a good deal considering AMC+ also carries the entire Shudder catalog).
The 13 AMC Series Streaming on Netflix
The Terror (Season 1, 2018)
Partial Series (two seasons aired, one season upcoming)
Only one season of The Terror will stream on Netflix, but that’s okay. As an anthology series, each of the two seasons of The Terror tells a self-contained story over ten episodes. Season one—which is adapted from the novel of the same name by Dan Simmons—is a fictionalized account of what happened to the crews of two Royal Navy ships in the mid-1800s when they tried to sail the Northwest Passage. The result is a harrowing historical drama with excellent horror elements. Season two of the series—streaming only on AMC+—is titled The Terror: Infamy, and it tackles Japanese mythology with a World War II setting. The upcoming season three has already been announced as an adaptation of Victor LaValle’s novel The Devil in Silver (2012).
Interview With the Vampire (Season 1, 2022)
Partial Series (two seasons aired, one season upcoming)
Interview with the Vampire takes significant liberties with certain aspects of Anne Rice’s novel, but the bones of the tale will still be familiar to fans of the book and of the 1994 movie. In many ways it’s modernized to explicitly tackle themes that were more implicit in previous incarnations. It also shifts the time periods (both of the modern time of when Louis is speaking to the journalist, and of the flashbacks to the historical part of the story) to provide new context for the plot. It works really well, and the series is quite good. Interview with the Vampire is also the first of AMC’s “Immortal Universe” which is a shared universe of shows all inspired by the writing of Anne Rice.
Mayfair Witches (Season 1, 2023)
Partial Series (one season aired, one season upcoming)
Alexandra Daddario stars in Mayfair Witches as Rowan Fielding, a neurosurgeon who discovers that she has incredible and terrifying power. A search for answers leads Rowan to New Orleans where she learns about her ancestry which is tied into a lineage of witches, conspiracies, and power struggles. Mayfair Witches has a strong Southern Gothic atmosphere that dives deep into themes of family and tradition.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (Season 1, 2023)
Partial Series (one season aired, one season upcoming)
Fan-favorite Walking Dead character Daryl Dixon no longer had to share the spotlight when he got his own solo show. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is part of AMC’s commitment to continuing the ongoing saga started by the main Walking Dead series. Daryl Dixon picks up the title character’s story as he finds himself stranded in France after his search for missing friends goes far off course. As he tries to find a way home, Daryl becomes entangled in a battle between a paramilitary group and a religious order that believes they are harboring a messiah. The show is entertaining for fans of the wider Walking Dead universe, second in spinoff-quality to only The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (which joins Netflix on January 13th, 2025).
Fear the Walking Dead (Seasons 1-8, 2015-2023)
Complete Series
Fear the Walking Dead has some significant peaks and valleys in terms of quality and entertainment throughout its eight seasons. This spinoff began about midway through The Walking Dead’s 11-season run, and it initially took place earlier in the timeline than we’d ever seen before. It began as a more focused story than the sprawling nature of the main series, focusing on a family and the few people that they encountered during the early days of the zombie apocalypse. But eventually, Fear started becoming a sprawling saga as well, with more and more characters (both original and crossovers from the main series) joining as many others died. Some seasons are great, others not so much, but it’s worth watching for hardcore fans, and to see the development of characters like Alicia, Strand, Nick, Morgan, John Dorie, and others.
A Discovery of Witches (Seasons 1-3, 2018-2022)
Complete Series
This British series focuses on Diana Bishop, a woman born as a witch of extraordinary natural ability. However, Diana’s past has caused her to eschew her inherited power. Instead of practicing as a witch, Diana is a historian. When she discovers a magical manuscript, she is ushered back into the supernatural world that she tried to put behind her. A Discovery of Witches contains drama and romance, and it’s well-regarded by viewers and critics alike.
Preacher (Seasons 1-4, 2016-2019)
Complete Series
Preacher is sort of like a cross between the omnipresent supernaturalness of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Supernatural and the humor and violence of The Boys. The preacher of the title Jesse Custer, a man struggling to live a life of righteousness in a small Texas town. Jesse soon learns that he has within him an unnatural ability to influence other people, and he sets out on a mission to find God (literally).
That Dirty Black Bag (Season 1, 2022)
Complete Series (the status of a second season is pending)
That Dirty Black Bag is a throwback to the days when Italian-made Westerns dominated the genre. Echoing the spaghetti Western in visuals and tone, That Dirty Black Bag follows a bounty hunter who collects heads in a bag (because a head weighs less than a body). The bounty Hunter, Red Bill, comes across an assortment of dangerous people, including a sheriff with a checkered past. This is for viewers who enjoy a show with a dark heart where everyone is a moral shade of gray.
Dark Winds (Seasons 1-2, 2022-2023)
Partial Series (two seasons aired, one season upcoming)
Set during the 1970s, Dark Winds is a tense crime thriller that feels like a modern Western and a neo-noir. Joe Leaphorn is an officer in the tribal police of the Navajo Nation where a murder has taken place. Regulations involving major crimes dictate that the FBI must be involved in the murder investigation, but the FBI agent sent to “help” is more interested in having Leaphorn help him track down the culprits of an armored car heist. Conflicting motivations drive the story as Leaphorn unravels a mystery that might connect both crimes.
Monsieur Spade (Season 1, 2024)
Complete Series (no second season announced yet)
If you’re craving a classic-feeling neo-noir detective series, Monsieur Spade has what you’re looking for. Sam Spade is a retired private detective who is now retired and living in France. But no fictional detective is ever truly retired, and Sam is drawn into a new mystery involving an old adversary and a particularly nasty set of murders. Rather than adapting any of Dashiell Hammett’s writings, Monsieur Spade is a completely original story.
Gangs of London (Seasons 1-2, 2020-2022)
Partial Series (two seasons aired, one season upcoming)
Anyone who enjoys gritty British gangster movies is sure to enjoy Gangs of London. When London’s most powerful crime boss is killed, the search for who ordered the hit—combined with the power vacuum created by the hit—leads to chaos in the streets. This series is violent and eminently engaging right from the very first episode.
Into the Badlands (Seasons 1-3, 2015-2019)
Complete Series
With plenty of violent martial-arts action, fans of post-apocalyptic action movies should check out Into the Badlands. Set hundreds of years into the future, the survivors of a societal collapse have formed various factions vying for power. Sunny (Daniel Wu) is the best fighter for one of the most powerful Barons, but his chance meeting with M.K. (Aramis Knight) leads the two of them on a journey that could change the Badlands forever.
Kevin Can F**k Himself (Seasons 1-2, 2021-2022)
Complete Series
Fans of dark comedies and psychological drama/thrillers will enjoy Kevin Can F**k Himself. The premise takes a stereotypical sitcom about a married couple, Allison and Kevin McRoberts, and explores the secret life of the beleaguered female lead. Jumping back and forth from a standard multi-camera sitcom aesthetic to a cinematic single-camera drama, the series focuses on the mental toll Allison endures by having to put up with the wacky hijinks her selfish, oblivious husband Kevin always gets into.
