Here are the movies and shows that should be on your radar this weekend (3/29):
The Marsh King’s Daughter (2023). Streaming on Hulu. A thriller about a woman, Helena (Daisy Ridley), whose father kept her and her mother captive in the wilderness when she was growing up. As an adult, Helene has kept this secret even from her partner. When Helene’s father escapes from prison, she believes he will target her daughter.
Slay (2024). Streaming on Tubi. This comedy horror movie follows four drag queens who end up performing at a rural dive bar due to a booking error. The unwelcoming crowd changes their tune when they need the Queens’ help fending off vampires. Slay stars former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants Trinity the Tuck, Heidi N Closet, Crystal Methyd and Cara Melle.
The Blob (1988). Streaming on Tubi. How can a gelatinous blob of pink jelly be scary? That’s the magic of horror cinema baby! This sci-fi horror film sees “the blob” (an alien life form) emerge from a fallen meteorite and begin to murder locals by absorbing them. A trio of high school students (Kevin Dillon, Shawnee Smith and Donovan Leitch) are the town’s best hope of survival, but no one will believe them.
Quiet on Set (2024). Streaming on Max. A heartbreaking docuseries by Investigation Discovery about the malice, grooming and sexual assaults that victimized Nickelodeon child stars behind the scenes. In particular, prolific Nickelodeon producer and writer Dan Schneider and convicted sex offender Brian Peck (who hung out on Nickelodeon sets in various roles) are discussed in detail. Quiet on Set is upsetting to watch, but hopefully will result in more safety for future child actors in Hollywood.
