Here are the movies and shows that should be on your radar this weekend (1/5):

Saltburn (2023). Streaming on Prime Video. This is a spicy dark comedy thriller that is one of the most fun movies of last year and is already streaming for anyone with a Prime account. If you thought Barry Koeghan was a strange boy in The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), just wait until you complete this film which is NOT FRIENDLY FOR FAMILY VIEWING. It’s about a poor university student (Koeghan) who becomes enamored with his wealthy classmate (Jacob Elordi), who invites him to spend the summer at his palatial family estate, called Saltburn. It’s a more comedic and less scary/creepy version of The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999).

Meg 2: The Trench (2023). Streaming on Netflix. Like the original, this is a silly sci-fi action/shark attack movie that’s a pretty great watch, if you’re into that kind of thing. Jason Statham, his step-daughter (Sophia Cai) and several research scientists explore the ocean floor and discover a rogue mining operation. The group then goes on the run from mercenaries and killer megalodon sharks.

Fool Me Once (2024). Streaming on Netflix. A British thriller limited series written by master of suspense Harlan Coben. The series follows a widow who sees her “murdered” husband on a nanny cam. As she digs into the mystery surrounding his supposed death, she feels the heat from whoever he was intent on hiding from.

The First Purge (2018). Streaming on Netflix. Also new on Netflix is this prequel to the Purge franchise that shows the start of the annual Purge and how it came about. It wasn’t well received by pretty much anyone when it came out but it’s a good watch for fans of the other Purge movies and is interesting to think about given the state of politics in the US.

The Oak Room (2021). Streaming on Prime Video. This is a deep cut suspense movie that is classed as horror but is pretty light on horror elements. Still, if you like slow burn mind f*ck movies, this is a good hidden gem. Also, the snowy winter vibes are perfect for this time of year.

Storm of the Century (1999). Streaming on Hulu. This Stephen King miniseries is worth a watch every winter (even better if you save it for a weekend with a snowstorm). It follows the residents of a small island community in Maine who are preparing for a big winter storm. A nefarious stranger shows up in town and waits until everyone is trapped by the storm to introduce himself and make a shocking demand of the community. King wrote the story as a screenplay directly to be produced as a television miniseries and has said it is his favorite TV adaptation of his writing.
