Here are the movies that should be on your radar this weekend (3/1):
Shake, Rattle & Roll Extreme (2023). Streaming on Netflix. A Filipino horror anthology film that is the 16th installment in the series. It contains three segments: “Glitch”, “Mukbang” and “Rage” addressing the horrors of technology, social media and zombies.
The Outwaters (2023). Streaming on Tubi. One of last year’s best horror movies is now free to watch on Tubi. The Outwaters is a found footage horror movie about four friends who travel to the Mojave desert to film a music video. Instead, they encounter strange phenomena and run for their lives. This is a “love it or hate it” movie that will be enjoyed by fans of found footage, survival horror and weird movies where the plot isn’t spoon-fed to the viewer.
Trunk — Locked In (2024). Streaming on Prime Video. A German drama action thriller about a medical student who wakes up in the trunk of a car with no recollection of how she got there. With the car hurtling toward an unknown destination, the woman has only her wits and her phone to help her survive.
The Descent (2005). Streaming on Hulu. Start off Women’s History Month with this British horror movie with an almost entirely female cast. The ups and downs of female friendship are the backdrop against which this very scary underground monster movie takes place. Sadly the original British ending was changed for the American release and you’ll have to seek out the superior alternate ending afterwards.
The Shout (1979). Streaming on Freevee. If you’re looking for a hidden gem to watch this weekend, British horror movie The Shout is free to watch (with commercials) on Freevee. The Shout is a strange film about a couple who invite a traveling man in for dinner. The man claims to have spent time living among the Aboriginal people and boasts that a shaman has taught him the “terror shout”, a scream so horrifying those who hear it die.
