Here are the movies and shows that should be on your radar this weekend (5/3):

Miller’s Girl (2024). Streaming on Netflix. Scream queen Jenna Ortega stars in this erotic thriller as a high school student who wants a relationship with her creative writing teacher. This looks to be in the lineage of “actually high school girls are temptresses and accusations ruin a man’s life” films like The Crush (1993) and Poison Ivy (1992). I’m not sure why this couldn’t at least be set in college, but okay, at least it looks good!

Raging Grace (2023). Streaming on Paramount+. Hoping to create a better life for her and her daughter, an undocumented immigrant takes a job caring for an infirm elderly man in a spooky old house. However, things are not as they seem in this gothic horror movie and our protagonist is about to uncover something sinister.

Baby Reindeer (2024). Streaming on Netflix. This stalking drama blends true crime into a narrative, lightly fictionalized, very bingeable limited series. Based on the creator’s real life experience, it shows a struggling comedian who becomes the victim of both an unhinged female stalker and an abusive male writer. This is worth checking out if you’re looking for something creepy and telenovela-like to submerge yourself in.

The Dead of Night (2021). Streaming on Freevee. Fair warning: this horror movie has pretty terrible reviews. However, it’s scary and I really liked it! It’s a violent, low-budget, Western-y take on The Strangers (2008). It follows a handful of people in a tiny New Mexico town where a duo of feral killers are on the loose. The Dead of Night also features iconic horror actor Lance Henriksen in a small role.

Fire in the Sky (1993). Streaming on Prime Video. New on Prime is this sci-fi film based on a true story. Fire in the Sky is a very scary alien movie about a man’s abduction that was witnessed by his group of friends. It’s a little made-for-TV movie in the first half, but the abduction scene is worth the wait.

Gattaca (1997). Streaming on Prime Video. Another sci-fi movie that’s new to Prime Video, this one has been off of streaming services for awhile. Ethan Hawke stars as a man in a near-future where genetics determine an individuals’ employment opportunities and social class. Born without the “right” genetics, he assumes the identity of a disabled athlete (Jude Law) in hopes of achieving his dreams of becoming an astronaut.
