The line up for 2024 proves that it’s guaranteed to be another great year for horror fans full of new terrifying stories and the return of many beloved franchises. There’s going to be a little bit of something for every fan of the genre—monsters, vampires, gothic tales, elevated horror, supernatural horror, religious horror, ghosts, remakes, and so much more!

Some films will come from acclaimed filmmakers like Tim Burton, M. Night Shyamalan, Jordan Peele, Ti West, and the Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet. New Horror Movies Releasing in 2024

Night Swim

Fans of shark attack movies will like this new “don’t go in the water” horror movie.

Expected Release Date: January 5, 2024

Based on a short film, Night Swim is a Blumhouse production by Jason Blum and James Wan and will be directed by Bryce McGuire in his feature directorial debut. The story follows the Waller family as they move into a new house, with the hopes that its swimming pool can be of use for the father’s physical therapy. Unbeknownst to them, the home has a dark secret from the past. It will release a malevolent entity who is hellbent on unleashing aquatic terror. 

Imaginary

Imaginary is an upcoming doll horror movie from Blumhouse.

Expected Release Date: March 8, 2024

Imaginary is another supernatural horror Blumhouse production. The film will be directed by Jeff Wadlow, director of Truth or Dare (2018) and Fantasy Island (202). It focuses on Jessica (DeWanda Wise) who returns to her childhood home. There her stepdaughter forms an attachment to a teddy bear named Chauncey and plays games with him that become increasingly sinister. Jessica discovers that the imaginary friend from her past is quite real—and extremely unhappy that she left him alone for all these years. 

Untitled Universal Monster Thriller

Expected Release Date: April 19, 2024

The plot is still under wraps for this project, but with stars like Melissa Barrera, Kathryn Newton, and the late Angus Cloud the hype is big. Cloud finished filming his scenes prior to his tragic death. The film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet, the duo responsible for Ready or Not (2019), Scream (2022), and Scream VI (2023). 

Immaculate

Expected Release Date: April 25, 2024

Good news for aficionados of religious horror! Sydney Sweeney stars as Cecelia in this new horror film directed by Michael Mohan (The Voyeurs). In it she plays a devout woman of faith offered a role at a distinguished Italian convent. The idyllic countryside that becomes her new home hides dark and sinister secrets. 

The Watchers

Expected Release Date: June 7, 2024

This horror film, written and directed by Ishana Shyamalan (daughter of M. Night Shyamalan), follows 28-year-old artist Mina, played by Dakota Fanning, as she gets stranded in a forest in western Ireland along with three strangers. There, each night the group is stalked and terrorized by mysterious creatures. The story has been described as a “gothic fairy tale” by Shyamalan. 

Horrorscope

Expected Release Date: June 28, 2024

Horror and astrology? Yes please! Horrorscope is an adaptation from a 1990s horror book and centers around a group of college friends who begin dying in ways connected to their birth charts after having their horoscopes read at a party. They must work to figure out if their fates are sealed by the stars or if there’s anything they can do to prevent their deaths. 

Mystery Jordan Peele Movie

Expected Release Date: December 25, 2024

The title and plot of Jordan Peele’s 2024 new horror film is still being kept a huge mystery, but not that much information is needed to draw up excitement for this new project. If horror fans can agree on anything after Get Out (2017), Us (2019), and Nope (2022) is that we can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve! 

The One

Scream queen Melissa Barrera stars alongside Nicholas Hoult and Lana Condor in this erotic horror-thriller. Taylor (Barrera) joins a reality dating show in a last-ditch effort to find real love. When she becomes one of three final contestants competing for the heart of Mason (Hoult), rivalry spirals into psychological warfare and the lines of reality begin to blur.

Heretic

Expected Release Date: TBD

Yellowjackets’ and The Boogeyman’s Sophie Thatcher stars in this A24 horror feature alongside Hugh Grant and Chloe East. The details of the plot have been kept hush, but reportedly it centers around two religious Mormon missionaries trying to convert a man who turns out to have sinister intentions. 

Dust Bunny

Expected Release Date: TBD

In this horror movie by director Bryan Fuller, an 8-year-old girl enlists her neighbor to help her kill the monster under her bed, who she believes is responsible for the deaths of her family. Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen and the legendary Sigourney Weaver also star in the film.

The First Omen

Expected Release Date: April 5, 2024

The First Omen serves as a prequel to 1976’s The Omen and follows a young American woman, played by The Servant’s Nell Tiger Free, who is sent to begin a life of service at The Vatican, where she encounters an evil that motivates her to question her faith. There she also uncovers a conspiracy behind the birth of the Antichrist—and the possible involvement of the Catholic Church. 

Return to Silent Hill

Expected Release Date: April 26, 2024 (rumored)

The franchise’s third installment also serves as a reboot. James (Jeremy Irvine) is lured back to the town of Silent Hill when he receives a mysterious letter from his long lost love, played by Hannah Emily Anderson (What Keeps You Alive, Jigsaw, and Dark Nature). As he delves deeper into the town, he discovers terrifying changes and a malevolent force. James struggles to keep his sanity and stay strong enough to find his old love. 

A Quiet Place: Day One

Expected Release Date: June 28, 2024

Don’t expect to see any of the familiar faces in this one, as it’s a spin-off prequel. Pig director Michael Sarnoski will replace John Krasinski in directing this film. The movie is set on the first day that the aliens begin to unleash terror on earth. It will star Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn. 

Speak No Evil

Expected Release Date: August 9, 2024

Speak No Evil is an English remake of the 2022 Danish psychological horror thriller of the same name. The story is essentially the same—a family heads out for a weekend trip to an idyllic country house only to have their vacation turn into a psychological nightmare. 

Beetlejuice 2

Expected Release Date: September 6, 2024

Not much is known about the plot to Tim Burton’s follow-up to Beetlejuice (1988). The film is one of the most anticipated sequels on this list—one that is over three decades in the making. Jenna Ortega will star among the new cast additions along Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Monica Belluci. Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara will be reprising their roles as Lydia Deetz and Delia Deetz, respectively. And of course, viewers will be seeing the return of Michael Keaton as the titular character. 

Smile 2

Expected Release Date: October 18, 2024

Smile took over the world and terrified audiences everywhere in 2022. The plot to the sequel has been kept under wraps so far, but fans were delighted when news of its release broke out. What is known, as confirmed by writer and director Parker Finn, is that Smile 2 will continue the events of the first film. Before the announcement of the sequel Finn said to Hollywood Reporter, “I would never want to just repeat myself or retread the same ground. I’d want to make sure that there’s a new, exciting, fresh way into it that the audience isn’t anticipating. I also want to find some new ways to scare them and unnerve them. But as far as how it may connect to the first one, if we were to do it, I’d want that to be surprising as well.”

Terrifier 3

Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) makes his return to unleash terror on the screen in the Christmas-themed horror Terrifier 3. It’s rumored that the third installment is even more gory and depraved than even the first two films. Lauren LaVera reprises her role as Sienna Shaw and Samantha Scaffidi is reintroduced as possessed survivor Victoria Heyes. 

MaXXXine

Mia Goth returns for the final film in Ti West’s X trilogy.

“Hollywood, here she comes!” Arguably, this is one of the most anticipated horror films of 2024. The iconic Mia Goth reprises her role as Maxine Minx in this sequel third installment to Ti West’s X film series. The film is a slasher “whodunnit” set in 1980s Los Angeles and follows Maxine’s journey towards fame. The movie also will include exciting appearances from singer Halsey, Lily Collins, Kevin Bacon, Elizabeth Debicki, and Giancarlo Esposito. 

They Follow

Expected Release Date: TBD 

Nearly 10 years later, modern scream queen Maika Monroe will be reprising her role as Jay Height in the sequel to It Follows (2015), which continues the character’s story. David Robert Mitchell will once again be directing. Not much has been reported about the plot, but from the title one can only assume there may be multiple monsters chasing Jay this time around. The first movie brought a compelling story and iconic monstrous villain unlike anything seen in horror before. 

The Strangers Trilogy 

A new Strangers trilogy will be released by Lionsgate in 2024.

The Strangers reboot stars Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez and is directed by Renny Harlin (Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master and Exorcist: The Beginning). The movies in the trilogy are set to be released at least two to three months apart. Part one will center around Maya (Petsch) and her boyfriend Ryan (Gutierrez) as they travel to a secluded Airbnb in Oregon. There the couple is terrorized by murderous masked strangers. 

Nosferatu

1922’s Nosferatu will be reimagined with Lily-Rose Depp as the protagonist Ellen Hutter, the object of the ancient Transylvanian vampire’s infatuation. Bill Skarsgård will play the vampiric Count Orlok and Nicholas Hoult will play Thomas Hutter. The exciting cast also features Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Ineson, and Emma Corrin. With atmospheric horror masterpieces like The Witch (2015), The Lighthouse (2019), and The Northman (2022), Robert Eggers is guaranteed to successfully bring to life a fresh take on the classic gothic tale. 

Witchboard

So many horror movies from the 1980s deserve remakes and the 1986 movie Witchboard is no exception. In 2024 it will be reimagined by director Chuck Rusell (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob), and it will be set in one of the most haunted cities in America, New Orleans. Madison Iseman plays Emily, a recovering addict who opens a cafe in the French Quarter with her fiancé Christian (Aaron Dominguez) and a group of friends. As they prepare for the opening, she discovers a pendulum board that sends her spiraling into darkness. An occult expert, played by Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things) is enlisted to help, but soon they discover a coven of powerful witches want to harm Emily and her friends. 

The Crow

Finally audiences will have what they have long awaited for in the new adaptation of the cult classic The Crow. Bill Skarsgård steps into the role of rock guitarist Eric Draven, previously played by the late Brandon Lee in 1994. The script was written by Oscar nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard) and Will Schneider and essentially stays true to the original graphic novel by James O’Barr. FKA Twigs has been cast as Draven’s fiancée Shelley Webster. After they’re both brutally murdered by a gang, Draven returns from the grave to exact his revenge. 

Trick ‘r Treat 2

Expected Release Date: TBD

The beloved 2009 Halloween anthology Trick ‘r Treat is getting a sequel in 2024! Fans have long awaited the return of the long-promised second movie of Michael Dougherty’s cult classic. Not many plot details are available yet, but the first movie featured several different stories that all meticulously tied together. Dougherty did share with Collider that “Trick ‘r Treat 2 would feature someone who’s an even more formidable foe for Sam. ‘The working title is Trick ‘r Treat 2, and we came up with a proper nemesis for Sam that would give Brian Cox a run for his money,’ he revealed.”

Thread: An Insidious Tale

Insidious is back! This time with a spinoff from the main original franchise that tells an entirely new and fresh story. Mandy Moore plays the wife to Kumail Nanjiani’s character. The couple turn to a magic spell to be able to travel back in time to prevent the death of their daughter. They come to learn the dangerous consequences of dabbling with such forces.
